CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This single class in the Motor Vehicle Operator series for positions who respond to vehicular accidents and emergencies on interstate and/or bridge tunnel complexes to remove disabled vehicles and assist motorists with minor repairs.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Operates either a wrecker or specially equipped pick-up to remove stalled, wrecked or overturned vehicles; clears traffic, escorts wide load through tunnel complexes; works to prevent or control fires; and updates motorists relative to response time of other emergency vehicles. Assesses the emergency situation, notifies the supervisor via radio, and reports findings. Delivers basic emergency first-aid to accident victims and works with rescue squad, fire, and state police personnel. Delivers and sets up arrow board trucks or performs manual traffic direction. Performs minor repairs to equipment such as greasing and changing/adding oil to prevent mechanical problems. Some positions may perform duties of the Bridge Tunnel Patroller during peak periods.

Supervision Given: None.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Bridge Tunnel Patroller Supervisor or other bridge tunnel or transportation maintenance supervisory personnel. Positions independently determine appropriate procedure or method to use in removing stalled, wrecked or overturned vehicles.

Scope: Responds to emergencies and incidents on interstate and bridge tunnel complexes in an assigned area.

Impact of Actions: Removal of disabled vehicles from traffic prevents further traffic congestion and aids in restoring traffic to normal speeds. Work actions and decisions affect the safety and well-being of the traveling public.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact while assisting the public, state and local and state police, local fire companies, and rescue squads with interstate and bridge tunnel incidents.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge in the operation of wreckers, specially equipped pickups, and dump trucks used to remove disabled vehicles; and of basic emergency first-aid. Some knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and repair.

Skills: Working skill in operating emergency vehicles and special signing equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with state and local police, fire and rescue units, and the public during emergency situations; to operate wreckers, specially equipped pickups, dump trucks and other types of emergency vehicles and equipment; perform physical activities to include lifting; and to perform routine vehicle maintenance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator's license and Commercial Driver's license at hire.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in operating emergency and vehicles with variable message signing equipment.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
