Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates a bus or light delivery vehicle on special assignments carrying passengers and mail, purchasing supplies and making pickups and deliveries for a State institution.

Duties of the position require the application of driving skill to insure passenger comfort and safety, but the work is characterized by employee/passenger relationships and employee/vendor transactions rather than driving duties. The incumbent is required to exercise judgment and discretion in selecting purchases and to exercise tact and diplomacy with inmates, patients, staff or visitors. The work normally includes standing assignments such as passenger and mail trips, but many assignments are of a non-routine nature and require the incumbent to do some elementary planning and scheduling in order to complete assignments with dispatch and accuracy. Supervision may be exercised over severa1 assistants who aid in loading and unloading.

Supervision is received through a review of completed assignments for conformance with instructions; assignments are for the majority of the time performed independently of close supervision.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Drives a vehicle to town from outlying institutions and picks up supplies such as food, drugs, hardware and freight; the incumbent is expected to check orders against delivery tickets and to check the condition of merchandise prior to signing for it.
  1. Drives a vehicle carrying passengers on regularly scheduled trips to town leaving and returning at a specified hour.
  2. Carries mail to and from the post office including registered mail and insured packages; may handle money in connection with these duties.
  3. Picks up and delivers baggage and freight to dormitories or barracks.
  4. May serve as custodian of bedding and furniture storeroom.
  5. Runs errands for staff or patients as authorized.

 

Qualification Standards

Elementary education and one year of experience in work involving public contact; a State chauffeur’s license.

Ability to read and follow instructions, ability to keep simple records; ability to perform manual tasks related to loading and incidental duties; ability to work with others.
