Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates heavy-duty motorized equipment on difficult buildings and grounds maintenance assignments or operates a large tractor-trailer truck on inter-city transporting.

The duties primarily involve the operation of equipment, requiring high concentration in mechancin1 operation and more extensive preventive maintenance than the trucks, tractors and similar equipment described in the class Motor Vehicle Operator A. Equipment operated in this class involves (1) work in which the driving of the machine is secondary to the manipulation of attachments for grading, spraying, drilling and similar operations (2) maneuvering cumbersome trucks which require special skill in highway driving or in backing in close quarters (such trucks are frequently equipped with complex gear shifting or power braking equipment) (3) the operation of equipment requiring exceptional care, accuracy skill or judgment in use due to the potential hazard to personnel or equipment.

Work assignments are received orally and operators perform the work with considerable independence. Completed work is reviewed by a supervisor for conformance with instructions. The operator may supervise a group of laborers on occasion and instruct others in the operation of equipment.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Operates a heavy-duty tractor-trailer or transfer truck transporting manufactured goods or linen on inter-city routes.
  2. Operates a motor grader building earth fills, shaping surfaces and cutting correct elevations for roads, grounds landscaping and building sites.
  3. Operates a crawler-type tractor with an angledozer or bulldozer attachment on earth-moving and grading operations, filling and shaping surfaces and removing trees and stumps.
  4. Performs manual labor or supervises a group of laborers in tasks related to the operation of equipment in this class.
  5. Makes minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; assists in making major repairs; cleans and services equipment and makes up equipment time cards.
  6. Instructs others in the operation of equipment.

 

Qualification Standards

One year of experience in the operation of power-driven equipment; a state motor vehicle operator’ license and ability to pass a performance test on selected equipment in this class.

A working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of at least two types of equipment in this class; a working knowledge of state laws, local ordinances, and agency regulations governing equipment operated; ability to make routine reports on hours worked or materials used; good physical condition.
