Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates light-duty motor vehicles on routine hauling or grounds maintenance assignments.

The duties primarily involve simile operation and maintenance of equipment. The skill required is equivalent to that required in operating a light truck, a dump truck or a tractor with attachments. Assignments are generally routine or repetitive in nature and frequently involve manual labor such as loading or unloading and adjusting attachments.

Work assignments are received orally and operators for the most part perform the work independently. Completed work is reviewed by a supervisor for conformance with instructions. The operator may supervise a group of laborers on occasion add instruct others in equipment operation.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Operates a truck up to 31 tons, transporting men and materials or, occasionally, pushing or pulling attachments such as snowplows or gravel spreaders; materials handled include hay, coal, trash, cinders, earth, leaves, feed, seed, fertilizer and food.
  2. Operates a tractor with attachments, such as snowplows, rollers, mowers, road brooms, spreaders, plows, cultivators, and hay rakes.
  3. Operates an air compressor furnishing power for pneumatic tools; drives truck when compressor is mounted; occasionally supervises tool operators and performs constant maintenance on machine.
  4. Operates a pup roller (3 to 5 tons).
  5. Performs manual labor incidental to equipment operation such as loading and unloading materials, adjusting and repairing equipment and mixing materials for concrete, fertilizing and seeding; performs various other classes of manual labor or clerical work as assignee when equipment is not in operation.
  6. Makes minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; aids on mayor repairs; cleans and services equipment and makes out routine reports on hours worked or materials used.
  7. Occasionally aids in instructing others in equipment operation.

 

Qualification Standards

A State motor vehicle operator’s license and ability to pass a performance test on selected equipment in this class.

A working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of light-duty automotive equipment; a working knowledge of State laws and agency regulations governing the operation of equipment; ability to make routine reports on hours worked or materials handled; good physical condition.
