CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Laundry Supervisory series. Positions in this class plan, schedule, coordinate and direct the overall activities of a laundry facility. These positions may also establish and maintain production schedules, procure materials, equipment, and supplies, prepare budgets, and confer and resolve problems with facility sections and vendors. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Manager by the latter's primary responsibility for scheduling, directing and coordinating the overall activities of a laundry facility or for managing the daily operations and assisting in the overall management of a laundry facility.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of unusual difficulty in the management of a complex laundry facility. Typical duties include planning and organizing daily laundry operations; reviewing production schedules and work records to ensure efficiency and quality control; making daily/weekly work assignments through subordinate laundry supervisors; planning, procuring, and issuing laundry supplies and equipment within budgetary limits; preparing annual operating budget for laundry operation; interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating employees and inmates for laundry work; investigating and resolving complaints regarding the laundry operation; coordinating schedules with customers; developing and monitoring preventative maintenance program; coordinating delivery schedules; preparing cost estimates for repairs and improvements; and coordinating inspections with licensing boards. These positions also supervise auxiliary operations such as a sewing room and delivery service.

Supervision Given: Plans, schedules, assigns and evaluates the work of Laundry Supervisors, Laundry Workers, and inmate labor.

Supervision Received: Receives general directions from an agency, facility, or Buildings and Grounds Manager.

Scope: Activities affect the operation of the laundry facility and the availability of clean laundry to a facility or group of facilities.

Impact of Actions: Failure to manage an efficient laundry operation may result in a lack of clean linens, clothing,a nd other laundry to a facility. Failure to adequately manage internal laundry operations may also result in equipment malfunctions and considerable repair costs.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with facility staff to plan and coordinate schedules and deliveries. Frequent external contact with vendors regarding the procurement of supplies and equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of industrial laundry equipment, supplies, and methods. Working knowledge of management principles and practices including budgeting, procurement, and supervision.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to manage the total operations of a laundry, to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinate supervisors and staff; and to prepare and manage budgets and procurement activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent with training in the operation of industrial equipment and supplies.

Level and Type of Experience: Extensive supervisory experience in industrial laundry operations and equipment, to include experience in budgeting, procurement, and training.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
