CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Laundry Supervisory series. Positions in this class schedule, direct and coordinate the overall activities of a laundry facility or manage the daily operations of a laundry facility and assist in its overall management. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Supervisor by the latter's primary responsibility for directly supervising laundry workers rather than planning and directing total operations. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Manager Senior by the latter's responsibility for planning, scheduling, coordinating and directing all activities of a laundry facility, including the development and management of budgetary and policy issues.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty with primary emphasis in the daily management of a laundry facility. Typical duties include planning and organizing daily laundry operations; reviewing productions, schedules and work records to ensure efficiency and quality control; making work assignments through subordinates; monitoring production operations and equipment maintenance and repair; interviewing, hiring, training and evaluating employees; investigating and resolving complaints regarding the laundry operations; maintaining data relevant to laundry operations and coordinating inspections with licensing boards. Duties may include recommendations for equipment purchases and budgetary plans.

Supervision Given: Plans, schedules, assigns and evaluates the work of Laundry Supervisors, Laundry Workers and inmate labor.

Supervision Received: Typically receives general directions from a Laundry Manager Senior or from a facility or Buildings and Grounds Manager.

Scope: Activities affect the effectiveness of the laundry operations and the availability of clean laundry to a facility or groups of facilities.

Impact of Actions: Failure to manage an efficient laundry operations may result in a lack of clean linens, clothing and/or laundry to a facility. Failure to adequately manage internal laundry operations may also result in equipment malfunctions and considerable repair cost.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with facility staff to plan and coordinate schedules and deliveries. Frequent external contacts with vendors regarding procurement of supplies and maintenance of equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of industrial laundry equipment, supplies, and methods; and of management principles and practices including budgeting, procurement, and supervision.

Skills: Considerable skill in the operation of laundry equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to manage the daily operations of a laundry, to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinate supervisor and staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent with training in the operation of industrial equipment and supplies.

Level and Type of Experience: Supervisory experience in industrial laundry operations and equipment at the journey level or higher. Experience in supervision and training.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
