CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Laundry Supervisory series. Positions in this class supervise the work of Laundry Workers and Mechanics while monitoring the daily operations of a laundry facility. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Lead Worker by its responsibility for performing the full range of supervisory duties. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Manager by the latter's responsibility for scheduling, coordinating, and directing the overall activities of a laundry facility, or for managing the daily operations and assisting in the overall management of a complex laundry facility.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which requires the oversight of daily laundry operations. The work typically involves assigning and inspecting the work performed by subordinate personnel to ensure that it meets standards; preparing and arranging work schedules to meet daily or changing workloads; training staff in proper laundry procedures and the use of the laundry equipment; maintaining an inventory of laundry supplies; ensuring the performance of equipment repairs; maintaining attendance reports; and resolving routine complaints or problems. Positions in this class conduct performance evaluations, recommend hiring, grant preliminary approval of leave, and resolve routine disciplinary problems.

Supervision Given: Assigns, inspects, schedules, and evaluates the work of Laundry Lead Workers or Laundry Workers. Recommends hiring and termination actions.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a Laundry Manager or higher level laundry or administrative position.

Scope: Activities affect the cleanliness and quality of laundry operations in an agency or institution.

Impact of Actions: Work has a moderate impact on agency operations by ensuring clean and sanitary laundry operations. Unclean or unsanitary conditions may cause health or safety hazards and influence public perception of the agency or institution.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class may have routine and frequent internal and external contacts with vendors, contractors, and other agency personnel to coordinate linen usage and delivery, and make arrangements for equipment installations and/or repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of laundry operations methods and the use of detergents and laundry supplies; of safety practices as related to the work; and of basic supervisory principles.

Skills: Considerable skill in the operation of laundry equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to direct the work of others; to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations; and to lift and move heavy loads of laundry.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the performance of laundry operations and directing the work of others.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
