CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Laundry Worker series. Positions in this class lead the work of other laundry workers and ensure the proper operation of equipment and accuracy of the laundering process. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Worker by its responsibility for leading, assigning and inspecting the work of other Laundry Workers. This class is distinguished from the Laundry Supervisor by the latter's responsibility for acting as a floor supervisor to ensure the overall efficiency of a major section of a large laundry operation or the entire operation of a small laundry facility.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which requires oversight of Laundry Workers. The work typically involves providing on-site work assignments to Laundry Workers and ensuring that the work is accomplished. Duties may include loading and unloading large capacity washers with soiled clothes and linens, loading and unloading large tumble dryers, shaking out wet laundry, operating pressing machines, feeding flat work into large automatic mangles, putting clean laundry into bags and recording weights, and loading clean laundry into delivery trucks. May issue new linens and towels and maintain inventory records. Lead Worker duties include training new workers on equipment operations; making on-site work assignments to Laundry Workers and monitoring completion of the tasks; and maintaining an inventory of supplies to be ordered and linens to be requisitioned.

Supervision Given: Functions in a lead capacity for a small to moderate size group of Laundry Workers or inmate crews by making assignments, providing guidance and inspecting completed work.

Supervision Received: General supervision is received from a higher level laundry position. Receives work assignments from supervisor and determines how to divide the tasks among the assignment workers to ensure completion.

Scope: Performs work tasks within an assigned work area.

Impact of Actions: Work has a moderate impact on agency operations by ensuring clean and sanitary laundry operations. Unclean or unsanitary conditions may cause health or safety hazards and influence public perception of the agency or institution.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class may have frequent internal and external contacts with vendors, contractors, and other agency personnel to coordinate linen usage and delivery, and make arrangements for equipment installations and/or repairs.
