CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first level in the Laundry Worker series. Positions in this class sort, mark, prepare, wash, dry, fold, press and distribute laundry or receive, process, store and distribute linen at various state facilities. This class is distinguished from Laundry Lead Worker by the latter's responsibility for leading the work of other Laundry Workers and ensuring that the equipment is being used properly and that correct laundry process and procedures are being applied.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty and repetitive nature. The duties are recurring and involves receiving, weighing, sorting and preparing laundry or linen for processing; loading, operating and removing laundry from commercial type washer/extractor; shaking out and segregating items for dryer or flat worker ironer; load, operate and remove clothes from dryer; feeding laundered items into flat-work irons and receiving flat work as it emerges from irons; folding and stacking ironed material; operating pressing machine to press shirts, pants and other clothing; sorting and packing clean laundry for distribution; assisting in the issuance of replacement of linens, towels and face clothes; and participating in the delivery of clean laundry. Linen room duties include receiving and weighing soiled linen, stocking and delivering clean linen and responding to requisitions for linen supplies.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class work under immediate supervision of a Laundry or Housekeeping Supervisor.

Scope: Facilitates the work of others but little or no impact beyond the immediate unit.

Impact of Actions: Positions in this class have minor impact on work progress or completion.

Personal Contacts: No personal contacts other than co-workers.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a laundry operation.

Skills: Working skill in the use of equipment used in a laundry operation.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and to perform manual labor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Elementary school or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Level and Type of Experience: An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledges and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
