CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third and highest level class in the Tailor series. Positions in this class perform advanced, complex tailoring assignments and may serve as a lead worker over other tailor positions. This class is distinguished from the Tailor class by its lead worker responsibilities, or by the responsibility to perform complex or intricate tailoring tasks. It is distinguished from the Tailor Supervisor class which provides formal supervision to Tailors.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibility for independently completing a full range of highly skilled tailoring projects. Duties include making, modifying or adapting patterns and cutting a variety of materials from designed, modified and pre-established patterns; assembling and sewing a variety of materials, making repairs and alterations. Items fabricated may include draperies, furniture covers, restraint and support devices; construction/modification of wearing apparel including dresses, pants, shirts and various types of uniforms. Positions assign and prioritize work, inspect finished products and may order necessary supplies and maintain inventory levels within established limits. This class performs preventive maintenance on tailoring/sewing machinery and related equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions may provide assistance, guidance, and assignments to Tailor Assistants and Tailors.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Tailor Supervisor or other services supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the successful on time completion of tailoring projects and the quality of the final product.

Impact of Actions: Effective decision and actions facilitate the timely and correct completion of tailoring projects.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with agency staff, residents and students regarding tailoring services. Infrequent external contacts with suppliers, vendors or others.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of standard practices and procedures of tailoring.

Skills: Considerable skill in tailoring techniques using a variety of sewing machinery and related equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to fabricate items from patterns or to adapt patterns to meet needs to take measurements, to sew a variety of complex items working with a variety of materials and to provide work direction.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school of equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the tailoring trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was revised as a part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Seamstress C class, effective May 1, 1992.
