CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second level class in the Tailor series. Positions in this class perform a wide range of skilled tailoring duties. This class is distinguished from the Tailor Assistant by the variety of sewing/tailoring tasks and responsibility for independently completing the more complex tailoring assignments. This class is distinguished from the Tailor Senior class by that class's responsibility for leading lower level Tailors.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibility for independently completing a full range of fully skilled tailoring projects. Duties include the routine modification of patterns and cutting a variety of materials from designed and pre-established patterns, and assembling and sewing a variety of materials, making repairs and alterations. Items fabricated may include draperies, curtains, pads and furniture covers, splint covers, restraint and support devices, and linens. Construction of wearing apparel may include gowns, dresses, shirts, pants, adaptive clothing to accommodate deformities, staff uniforms, athletic uniforms, cadet and band uniforms, coats, bedroom slippers, and corps flags. Work is accomplished by using a variety of machinery and equipment such as straight stitch and serge sewing machines, scissors, tape measure, hot patch machine, hammer and punch for grommets or grommet machine, cutter, gripper, elastic and safety stitch machines. Performs preventive maintenance on machinery and equipment such as oiling and cleaning.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions may provide technical guidance to Tailor Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Tailor Supervisor. Positions receive some instruction, but are free to develop own work sequence within established policies and procedures.

Scope: Work affects the successful completion of sewing projects and the quality of the final product.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance results in the successful and timely completion of projects. Ineffective job performance can negatively affect cost, service, timeliness, and public image in areas where appearance is critical.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with agency staff, residents or students.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of a full range of tailoring procedures.

Skills: Working skill in the use of a variety of sewing machinery and equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to fabricate items from patterns, to take measurements, and to sew a variety of complex items working with a variety of materials.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in a variety of sewing and tailoring tasks.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
