CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Tailor series. Positions in this class perform a wide range of semi-skilled, routine sewing, and tailoring tasks, working with and assisting higher level tailors. This class is distinguished from the Tailor class by the latter's responsibility for independently performing skilled, complex tailoring tasks.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs semi-skilled work of routine difficulty to assist higher level tailors. Typical duties include cutting a variety of materials from pre-established patterns, assisting in the assembly, repair, alteration and fabrication of draperies, adaptive clothing, gowns, dresses, shirts, pants, uniforms, flags and linens; and the replacement of zippers and pockets. This class also cleans and clears the work site.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class work under the immediate supervision of a Tailor Supervisor.

Scope: Facilitates work of others but has little impact beyond work site.

Impact of Action: Positions in this class have minor impact on work progress or completion.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with agency staff, residents and students.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of basic sewing and tailoring procedures.

Skills: Working skill in the use of sewing machines and other tailoring machinery and equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written instructions and to perform basic sewing and tailoring work.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: None required to enter this class.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
