CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class and second supervisory level in the Housekeeping Management Series. This class is responsible for scheduling, assigning, supervising and inspecting the work of a large number of subordinates performing housekeeping functions at an agency or institution. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Supervisor class by responsibility for a larger work force and work area and increased authority to resolve issues regarding human resources and operational aspects of the housekeeping program. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Manager class by the manager’s broader scope of supervisory responsibility for a major segment of the housekeeping program at a large agency or institution, or administration of the entire housekeeping program, at small agencies or hospitals.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty involving the supervision of Housekeeping Worker Seniors, Housekeeping Lead Workers, and Housekeeping Workers in the performance of housekeeping functions at an agency or institution. Duties typically include reviewing and revising work schedules, procedures and manpower requirements; inspecting work; ensuring equipment maintenance; planning to meet needs of special events or special cleaning requests; and responding to requests from supervisors and subordinates. Develops and presents housekeeping training programs and maintains training records. Conducts or provides substantial input on performance evaluations, disciplinary actions and new equipment purchases. Positions in this c1ass may be required to submit reports on labor, supply and equipment utilization, and participate in budget preparation. Positions may also inspect and coordinate custodial work performed by custodial contractors.

Supervision Given: Gives general supervision to subordinate housekeeping personnel.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from a Housekeeping Manager, or other higher level housekeeping or administrative position.

Scope: Work involves activities related to the cleaning and upkeep of agency or institution buildings and facilities.

Impact of Actions: Performs work which has a moderate impact on the operations of the agency by ensuring clean ant sanitary conditions. Unclean conditions may cause health or hazards and influence public perception of the agency. Successful performance of the duties can lead to a positive image for the agency.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with other agency personnel, visitors and vendors of cleaning and linen supplies to evaluate and order supplies and equipment, and respond to cleaning requests.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of housekeeping methods, equipment and chemicals, and personnel management techniques.

Skills: Considerable skill in the operation, maintenance and usage of cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise; to read, write and keep basic records; to communicate orally; and to train others in the use of cleaning supplies and equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the housekeeping field and as a lead worker or supervisor.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in August 1988 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class supersedes the Housekeeping Supervisor C class.
