CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Housekeeping Series. Positions are responsible for overseeing the work of subordinate staff which may include Housekeeping Lead Workers and Housekeeping Workers. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Lead Worker class by its responsibility for less hands-on involvement with the cleaning process and its increased involvement with administrative procedures. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Supervisor class by its responsibility for leading and directing the work of others rather than having responsibility for full supervision.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which requires the oversight of daily housekeeping functions. The work typically involves assigning and inspecting the work performed by subordinate personnel to ensure that it meets cleanliness standards; preparing and arranging work schedules to meet daily or changing workloads or to meet demands of special events or special cleaning requests; training staff in proper cleaning methods and the use of cleaning equipment; maintaining an inventory of cleaning equipment and supplies and ordering supplies; initiating action on equipment repairs; maintaining inspection, time and attendance, inventory or cleaning deficiency reports; and resolving routine complaints or problems. Positions in this class grant preliminary approval of leave, resolve routine disciplinary problems and provide input in the performance evaluation and hiring/firing process.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions assign, inspect, and schedule the work of Housekeeping Lead Workers or Housekeeping Workers.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a Housekeeping Supervisor Senior or a higher level housekeeping or administrative position.

Scope: Activities affect the appearance and cleanliness of agency facilities.

Impact of Actions: Work has a moderate impact on agency operations by ensuring clean an sanitary conditions. Unclean conditions may cause health or safety hazards and influence public perception of the agency or institution.

Personal Contacts: Positions frequently have routine contacts with agency staff, contract cleaning staff, or the public concerning cleaning requests or complaints.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, and equipment; and of safety practices as related to the work.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to lead the work of others. Demonstrated ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations. Demonstrated ability to lift or move heavy objects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in housekeeping/cleaning large buildings and leading the work of others.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This specification was established in August 1988 as a result of the Statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class, along with the Housekeeping Supervisor class, supersedes the Housekeeping Supervisor B class.
