CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Housekeeping Series. This class is responsible for performing housekeeping functions in classrooms, dormitories, hospitals, and other public buildings. Positions in this class serve as lead workers for Housekeeping Workers and perform routine housekeeping duties. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Worker class by the responsibility for assigning the work and ensuring its completion. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Worker Senior class by the responsibility for hands-on performance of routine housekeeping duties and the absence of responsibility for scheduling workers, reporting on work progress and quality, and/or ordering of supplies and equipment.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which requires oversight of Housekeeping Workers. The work typically involves providing on-site work assignments to Housekeeping Workers and ensuring that the work is accomplished. Duties may include cleaning floors, carpets, windows, walls, furniture, lavatories, and other interior space; changing and cleaning beds and linens; folding and storing linens; gathering and disposing of trash; setting up for special events; moving furniture; locking and unlocking assigned buildings; and replenishing supplies. May perform duties in areas adjacent to building including snow and ice removal, raking leaves, gathering trash, and sweeping sidewalks. The work requires the use of cleaning equipment and cleaning and germicidal agents to sanitize, sterilize, and disinfect. May give directions regarding facilities to visitors. Identifies and reports need for repairs to supervisor. Lead worker duties include training new workers by demonstrating use of equipment or cleaning techniques; making on-site work assignments to Housekeeping Workers and monitoring completion of the tasks; reporting hours worked by Housekeeping Workers to supervisor; and inventorying supplies to be ordered and reporting shortages to the supervisor.

Supervision Given: Functions in a lead capacity for a small to moderate size group of Housekeeping Workers by assigning the work and ensuring its completion.

Supervision Received: General supervision is received from a higher level housekeeping or buildings and grounds position. Receives work assignments from supervisor and determines how to divide the tasks among the assigned workers to ensure completion.

Scope: Performs work tasks within an assigned work area.

Impact of Actions: Cleanliness of assigned areas enhances the appearance of work areas, and the convenience, health, and safety of users (employees, students, residents, patients) and visitors.

Personal Contacts: Position have frequent contact with those working, living, and visiting in the assigned areas for the purpose of responding to requests to clean spills, move objects, identify the location of facilities or other workers

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of cleaning methods and use of cleaning chemicals and supplies; and of safety practices as related to the work.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of manual and power cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of cleaning tasks, lift and move heavy objects, to give and receive instructions, and to guide the work of others. Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment such as floor buffers or waxers, and to read and write may be required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Elementary school or equivalent combination of training an experience su Ancient to perform reading and writing skills when necessary.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in performance of cleaning tasks.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class specification was revised in August 1988 as part of the Statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This revision supersedes the Housekeeping Supervisor A class specification.
