CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Housekeeping Series. This class is responsible for the housekeeping duties in classrooms, dormitories, hospitals, and other public buildings. The work in this class is generally repetitive in nature and is subject to close review. Positions perform a variety of housekeeping duties inside the buildings as well as in the areas adjacent to the buildings. This class is distinguished from the Housekeeping Lead Worker class by the latter’s responsibility for assigning work and ensuring its completion.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which is repetitive and for which detailed instructions are provided. The work typically includes cleaning floors and carpets, windows, walls, furniture, lavatories and other interior space. These duties require the use of a variety of cleaning equipment and cleaning and germicidal agents to sanitize, sterilize, and disinfect. Replenishes supplies; and observes and reports the need to repair equipment or facilities to the supervisor. Incumbents are also responsible for changing, cleaning, folding and storing linens; gathering and disposing of trash; and moving furniture. May perform duties in areas adjacent to buildings including snow and ice removal, raking leaves, gathering trash and sweeping sidewalks. Positions in this class may be required to perform other tasks such as locking/unlocking doors; answering inquiries about facilities; performing minor maintenance including changing light bulbs and fuses/circuit breakers; and setting up for special events.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under immediate supervision of higher level housekeeping or buildings and grounds positions.

Scope: Work tasks are generally restricted to an assigned work area.

Impact of Actions: Cleanliness of assigned areas enhances the appearance of work area, and the convenience, health, and safety of users (employees, students, residents, patients) and visitors.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with individuals working and visiting in assigned areas and are generally for the purpose of responding to requests to clean spills, move objects, or identify the location of other workers or facilities.

 

KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of cleaning methods and use of cleaning chemicals, equipment and supplies; and of safety practices as related to the work.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of manual and power cleaning equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to follow oral instructions; to perform a variety of cleaning tasks; and to tolerate contact with a variety of cleaning products and solutions. Demonstrated ability to lift heavy objects; stand for extended periods of time; and perform manual labor.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in performance of cleaning tasks indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
