WELDER SENIOR 61572

03/01/93 G

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second and advanced level in the Welder series. Positions in this class perform critical welding on equipment and structures such as bridges, buildings, or high pressure vessels using advanced welding techniques and equipment. Positions in this class are responsible for developing conceptual designs and fabricating equipment and components to meet specific agency needs. This class is distinguished from the Welder by its responsibility for conceptual design and fabrication and for performing critical welding tasks using advanced welding techniques.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty using advanced welding techniques. Performs flat, overhead, horizontal, and vertical welding to repair and fabricate a wide variety of structures, equipment, and machinery. Assesses properties of various metals and materials to determine appropriateness for use. Welds, cuts, brazes, and solders in the fabrication and repair of metal parts and components. Inspects damaged components and equipment to determine the appropriate welding procedures and prepares preliminary cost estimates. Conceptualizes and designs components and equipment to meet specific agency needs. Fabricates components and equipment from blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions. May also perform critical welding to maintain and repair heating/cooling systems, high pressure steam and water lines, and/or bridges. Maintains records of work performed and inventory of parts and supplies.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may provide technical guidance, instruction, and review to Welders, other trades workers and/or inmates.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from an Equipment Repair Supervisor or a higher level supervisor in buildings and grounds or facilities management series.

Scope: Performs welding and fabrication activities using advanced techniques in support of an agency's repair and maintenance facilities.

Impact of Actions: Quality of work affects the safe and efficient operation of various heating and cooling systems, equipment and machinery, and/or the structural integrity of bridges and buildings.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with all levels of agency personnel on repair matters. Occasional external contacts with suppliers to obtain materials and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of advanced welding techniques, materials, and equipment, and metallurgical properties and structural principles.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of a variety of welding tools and equipment which may include mig, tig, electronic/carbon arc, oxyacetylene torch, plasma torch, wire, stick, and other welding equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches; to conceptualize, design, and fabricate components and equipment; to perform mathematical calculations; to satisfy agency certification requirements; to perform manual labor; and to prepare preliminary cost estimates and maintain accurate records.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: May be required to obtain certification to perform critical welds. Valid operator's license may be required.

Education or Training: Vocational training or course work in advanced welding techniques.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in performance of critical welds using advanced welding techniques.

A combination of education, training, and/or experience may substitute for the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CLASS HISTORY
