WELDER 61571

03/01/93 G

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first and journey level in the Welder series. Positions in this class perform general maintenance and repair welding on equipment, machinery, and non-critical components of bridges, pressure vessels, and other structures. Positions may also perform basic fabrication of equipment and components from blue prints and sketches. This class is distinguished from the Welder senior by the latter's responsibility for conceptual design and fabrication and for performing critical welding tasks using advanced welding techniques.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty using a variety of welding equipment and techniques. Performs flat, overhead, horizontal, and vertical welding to repair and fabricate components for equipment, machinery, and structures. Assesses properties of various metals and materials to determine appropriateness for use. Welds, cuts, brazes, and solders in the fabrication and repair of metal parts and components. Inspects damaged components and equipment to determine the appropriate welding procedures and may prepare preliminary cost estimates. Fabricates components and equipment from blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions. May maintain records of work performed and an inventory of parts and supplies.

Supervision Given: Supervision is generally not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from an Equipment Repair Supervisor or a higher level supervisor in the Buildings and Grounds or related facilities management series.

Scope: Performs a variety of routine welding tasks in support of an agency's repair and maintenance facilities.

Impact of Actions: Quality of work affects the safe and efficient operation and structural integrity of equipment and machinery and auxiliary components of various heating and cooling systems.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with all levels of agency personnel on repair matters. Occasional external contacts with suppliers to obtain materials and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of welding techniques, materials, and equipment; and of metallurgical properties and structural principles.

Skills: Skill in the use of welding tools and equipment required for general repair and maintenance tasks.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to fabricate components and equipment from blueprints and sketches; to perform mathematical calculations; and to perform manual labor.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: May require valid operator's license.

Education or Training: Vocational training or course work in welding.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in general welding techniques.

A combination of education, training, and/or experience may substitute for the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CLASS HISTORY
