ELECTRICIAN SUPERVISOR SENIOR 61562

05/01/92 G

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second and highest level supervisory class in the Electrician Supervisory series. Positions in this class are responsible for assigning, scheduling, overseeing, inspecting, and evaluating the work of Electrician Assistants, Electricians, Electrician Seniors and contract workers involved in maintenance and repair of complex electrical equipment which may include high voltage. This class is distinguished from the Electrician Supervisor by its responsibility to supervise multiple crews of electricians assigned to maintain, repair, and install complex electrical equipment and/or high voltage systems at geographically dispersed locations. The class is further distinguished from the Electrician Supervisor by having responsibility for equipment with greater variety of power sources ranging to more than 600 volts.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of unusual difficulty which includes the training, supervision, and evaluation of the performance of work crews in the installation and repair of complex electrical and/or high voltage systems. Systems including power to Traffic Management Systems, such as cameras, amplifiers, reversible roadway gates, and variable message signs, electrical/mechanical devices and navigational lights on drawbridges. Directs the preventive maintenance program; assures work is in compliance with preventive maintenance schedules and guidelines; schedules preventive maintenance, setting poles, repairing signs and luminaries, and cable faults. Oversees and assigns daily work tasks for crews to troubleshoot. Visually inspects electrical projects to determine staffing, materials, and equipment needed to accomplish the work for repairs and preventive maintenance. Assures all duties at the job site are done in accordance with proper safety policies and procedures. Maintains records and documentation associated with maintenance needs, safety inspection, safety meeting, performance, time sheets, and daily job requirements. Inspects and performs routine checks on assigned vehicles, test equipment, safety equipment, and tools to ensure all are in good working condition. Oversees and provides technical guidance to crews in the installation and repair of complex electrical equipment; instructs workers in reading blueprints and using tools. Performs preventive maintenance by routine check on a scheduled basis. Performs routine check on assigned test equipment (voltage meter, cable fault locator, search wand) and vehicles. Oversees contractors at project sites. Buys parts such as non-stock items; repairs equipment and sometimes fabricates equipment. Prioritizes complaints and determines daily assignments. Assigns, directs, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff; assumes full supervisory responsibilities by interviewing, hiring, evaluating performance, taking disciplinary action, and approving work schedules.

Supervision Given: Provides direction to Electrician Seniors, Electricians, and Electrician Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a higher level buildings and grounds supervisor or manager, or an Electrical Engineer, with regard to overall program goals and objectives as they relate to assigned responsibilities.

Scope: Activities affect the operation of complex and/or high voltage electrical equipment and systems which affects agency processes, system, personnel, and clients.

Impact of Actions: Work has considerable danger. Effective job performance ensures the safe and continued operation of complex and/or high voltage electrical equipment and systems as well as the safety of the work crew and general public. Errors could result in unsafe working conditions; hazardous conditions for the public; additional costs in terms of time, money, and resources; or in the failure to provide services.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class have frequent external contact with service personnel from utility companies to maintain service to the agency. Contacts also include electrical supply companies in obtaining supplies and construction contractors to inspect the installation of electrical systems. Infrequent internal contact with agency officials to resolve routine problems and provide service.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledges: Comprehensive knowledge of the standard practices of the electrical trade; of the installation and maintenance of complex high and standard voltage electrical equipment and systems; of the national electric code; and of supervisory principles.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of electrician's tools and instruments used to install and maintain complex, high and standard voltage, electrical equipment and systems.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to repair and install complex, high and standard voltage, electrical equipment and systems; to supervise the work of others; to accurately calculate project requirements; and to train lower level electricians.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional course work related to the electrical trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, installation, and repair of complex and/or high voltage electrical equipment and systems.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

CLASS HISTORY

This class was revised, effective May 1, 1992, as a result of a Classification Review/Specification Update study and an agency study of the Highway Equipment Electrician series. Positions in this class were previously included in the Highway Equipment Electrician Foreman B class.
