CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first supervisory level class in the Electrician Supervisory series. Positions in this class are responsible for assigning, scheduling, overseeing, inspecting and evaluating the work of subordinate staff to include Electrician Assistants, Electricians, Electrician Seniors and contract employees. Positions assume complete responsibility for the initial planning and layout of projects, and the interpretation and application of specifications. This class is distinguished from the Electrician Senior class by its responsibility for formal supervisory duties. It is distinguished from the Electrician Supervisor Senior by that class's responsibility for formal supervision over electrical staff involved in the most complex electrical systems and equipment which include high voltage systems.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which involves having complete responsibility for the initial planning and layout of projects; the acquisition of necessary materials, tools, and equipment; and the interpretation and application of specifications. The work typically involves training and supervising Electrician Seniors, Electricians, and Electrician Assistants in the installation and repair of conduits, wire molding, lighting and receptacle circuits, communications circuits and control systems. Periodically inspects electrical systems and equipment for compliance with specifications and develops a program for routine corrective repairs and maintenance; directs preventive maintenance program for all electrical systems; coordinates work projects with other trades supervisors, outside contractors and agency departments; estimates materials and labor necessary to complete projects; and performs quality control inspections. Assigns, directs and evaluates the work of subordinate staff. Assumes full supervisory responsibilities by interviewing, recommending for hire, evaluating performance, taking disciplinary action, and approving work schedules. Some positions may also be required to perform electronic repair and maintenance tasks.

Supervision Given: Provides supervision to Electrician Seniors, Electricians, and Electrician Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a higher level buildings and grounds supervisor or manager, with regard to overall program goals and objectives as they relate to assigned responsibilities.

Scope: Activities affect the operation of electrical equipment which affects agency processes, systems, personnel and clients.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance ensures the safe and continued operation of electrical equipment. Errors could result in unsafe working conditions; additional costs in terms of time, money and resources; or in the failure to provide services.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class have frequent external contact with service personnel from utility companies to maintain service to agency. Frequent internal contact with agency personnel to resolve routine problems and provide service.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the standard practices of the electrical trade; of the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment; of the national electric code; and of supervisory principles.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of tools and instruments used to install and maintain electrical equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to repair and install electrical equipment; to supervise the work of others; to accurately calculate project requirements; to train lower level electricians; and to communicate orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent, with additional course work related to the electrical trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
