WELL DRILLER 61542

05/01/92 C

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Well Driller series. This single position class is responsible for the well drilling activities for the State Water Control Board's Groundwater Program. This class installs groundwater research stations in areas where detailed hydrogeologic information is needed. This class is distinguished from the Well Driller Assistant class which performs duties preparatory to well drilling activities and assists the Well Driller in the course of work.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Drills test holes at research stations using hydraulic rotary drill rigs. Designs well construction specifications in cooperation with geologists. Obtains core samples at predetermined depths by using coring equipment in order to determine the various physical parameters of differing strata in the geologic column. Develops and constructs observation wells at research stations. Performs limited field analysis of samples. Maintains hydraulic rotary drill rigs and associated equipment in proper working order. Provides direct supervision to a Well Driller Assistant by assigning work and evaluating performance.

Supervision Given: Provides direct supervision to a Well Driller Assistant.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Geologist.

Scope: Work affects the construction of groundwater research stations statewide for the Water Control Board.

Impact of Actions: Effective design and construction of research stations positively affects the quality and validity of research data obtained. Errors can result in the inefficient use of time, money, and other resources; and can lead to the loss of expensive drilling equipment.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with geologists in the course of performing assigned duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of drilling fluids; drilling equipment; agency research objectives; and of well design and construction techniques.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of hydraulic rotary drilling and coring equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform heavy manual labor and related mechanical tasks; and to design and install groundwater research stations.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in the use of drilling equipment.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience related to groundwater research station construction.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

CLASS HISTORY

This class was formerly titled the Water Resources Well Driller class. It was revised and retitled as part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program, effective May 1, 1992.
