CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Well Driller series. This single position class is responsible for providing assistance to a Well Driller in the construction of ground water research stations. Major responsibilities include maintaining equipment, setting up and tearing down rigging, maintaining an activity log and assisting with the manual labor aspects of the work. This class is distinguished from the Well Driller class which designs, develops and supervises the construction of ground water research stations.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty. Sets up well drilling rigs, tools and equipment. Assists with taking water samples. Assists with the storage and maintenance of equipment and tools. Marshals and transports rigs, tools and equipment to the work site. Maintains a log of work activities. Performs limited field analysis of groundwater. Tears down rigging at project's completion.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision from a Well Driller.

Scope: Work affects the preparation for the construction of groundwater research stations statewide for the Water Control Board.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance positively affects the timeliness of projects and the efficient operation of equipment and tools.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent contacts with project staff in the course of completing routine assignments.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of basic drilling equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of hydraulic rotary drilling equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform heavy manual labor and related mechanical tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in a mechanical trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in a related mechanical field.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was formerly titled the Water Resources Well Driller Assistant class. It was revised and retitled as part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program, effective May 1, 1992.
