CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the supervisory and highest level class in the Power Plant Operations series. Positions in this class supervise boiler and turbine room operations by directing the work of Boiler Operators, Turbine Operators, Boiler Operations Assistants, and Power Plant Operations Lead Workers on a designated shift. This class is distinguished from the Power Plant Operations Lead Worker class by its formal supervisory duties.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty by supervising a group of power plant workers and/or inmates while overseeing the entire operation of a power plant on a designated shift. Typical duties include planning, assigning, inspecting and evaluating the work of other power plant workers for a specific shift by making periodic records; overseeing the efficient operation of a boiler room by observing, monitoring, and adjusting boilers, condensors, pumps, fans and related equipment; supervising turbine room operations to maintain proper steam loading and electrical peak shaving; supervising and performing boiler water analysis and treatment; supervising and performing preventive and corrective maintenance and repair of equipment; diagnosing equipment malfunctions; maintaining and reviewing plant logs; making periodic rounds to ensure a safe and clean working area; providing training and instructions on proper work methods and procedures to subordinate employees.

Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Power Plant Lead Workers, Boiler Operators, Turbine Operators, Power Plant Mechanics, and Boiler Operator Assistants or inmates performing related routine tasks.

Supervision Received: Typically receives directions from a Power Plant Superintendent.

Scope: Ensures the efficient and safe operation of a power facility on a designated shift.

Impact of Actions Activities seriously affect the total operation of the power plant. Inaccurate or insufficient directions to subordinate supervisors may result in a power failure, an impotable water supply, damage to equipment, and personal injury to self or others.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external and internal contact with parts vendors, chemical supply and testing companies and agency buildings and grounds personnel to discuss power plant operations.

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of high pressure boiler and/or turbine operations, water treatment and auxiliary equipment associated with power plant operations, and of supervisory principles and practices.

Skills: Considerable skill in the operation of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others, to analyze and regulate power plant equipment, and to maintain accurate records.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Cerrtification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with training in boiler maintenance and repair.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in power plant operations at the journey level or higher.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
