CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Power Plant Operations series. Positions in this class operate, monitor, and maintain boilers and related equipment while leading the work of Boiler Operators, Turbine Operators, Power Plant Mechanics, and/or Boiler Operators Assistants or inmates performing related routine tasks. This class is distinguished from the Power Plant Operations Shift Supervisor class by the latter's responsibility to supervise Power Plant staff assigned to an operating shift.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty while leading a group of power plant workers and inmates. Typical duties include observing, monitoring, and adjusting gauges and controls at periodic intervals; recording water and steam pressure and temperature; checking and adjusting condensers, compressors, and heaters; providing technical direction to Boiler Assistants and Boiler Operators in the firing of boiler equipment; performing preventive and corrective maintenance and minor repairs on boiler equipment; posting daily log sheets; monitoring and testing boiler feed water to determine amount and type of chemical additives to be used. Positions in this class also provide technical guidance and instructions to other power plant workers firing and operating boilers and related equipment, and inmates performing routine tasks such as loading coal and cleaning and removing ashes from boilers.

Supervision Given: Provides technical guidance to Boiler Operators, Turbine Operators, Power Plant Mechanics, and Boiler Operations Assistants and inmates.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Power Plant Operations Shift Supervisor or Superintendent.

Scope: Work affects the efficient overall operation of a power plant during a specific shift, and the occupant comfort level in buildings served.

Impact of Actions: Failure to accurately perform assigned tasks may result in power or heating failure, equipment damage, and personal injury.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact with parts suppliers and water chemical company representatives. Infrequent internal contact with State Boiler Inspectors.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of high pressure power boiler operation and auxiliary equipment associated with power plant operations.

Skills: Working skill in the use of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read, analyze and record gauges and instruments, to maintain accurate records, to perform minor repair and preventive maintenance on power plant equipment, and to lead the work of other power plant workers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with training in boiler maintenance and repair.

Level and Type of Experience: Journey level experience in power plant operations.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
