CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second level class in the Plumber/Steamfitter series. Positions in this class perform a variety of skilled repair, installation and maintenance tasks on steam distribution lines with hot water, cold water and steam, boilers, and institutional plumbing systems, fixtures and related equipment. This class is distinguished from the Plumber/Steamfitter Assistant by its responsibility for independently performing skilled maintenance installation and repair as well as its responsibility for providing technical guidance to Plumber/Steamfitter Assistants. It is distinguished from the Plumber/Steamfitter Lead Worker by the latter's responsibility for leading, assigning and inspecting the work of Plumber/Steamfitters and other semi-skilled workers.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibility for independently installing, repairing and maintaining steam and water lines and systems and boilers. Typical duties may include locating and marking spots for openings in walls, ceilings and floor for installation of pipe or related equipment; preparing or overseeing cutting, threading, joining and sealing pipes for hanging; or laying and joining of concrete, clay or iron pipe in ditches to ensure an uninterrupted flow of water steam or sanitary waste systems. Positions in this class may also install and fit pumps, gaskets, valves, traps; pack joints with appropriate sealing material; test for leaks; remove, repair or replace and reinstall plumbing fixtures; unstop sinks, toilets, drains and drain lines; estimate and order necessary materials and supplies; interprets blueprints and make sketches for other workers; and review and check assigned plumbing/steamfitting work of less skilled workers. In small organizations positions may serve as the single, charge plumber/steamfitter. Positions may also diagnose, connect and repair pneumatic control circuits, install and repair well systems, calibrate fuel dispensing pumps, install and repair fuel storage systems to include the assembly of fiberglass pipe and fittings, maintain swimming pool filter systems and the chlorine and PH levels in pool water.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision and some instruction from a Plumber/Steamfitter Supervisor but is free to develop own work sequences within established procedures and policies.

Scope: Completes a wide variety of repair, maintenance and installation projects from inception to completion.

Impact of Actions: Failure to correctly perform required repair, installation or maintenance duties may moderately impact agency by creating or sustaining system failures and undesirable environmental conditions.

Personal Contacts: Positions may have frequent internal and external contacts with vendors, contractors, the public, and agency personnel in the performance of their duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the installation, maintenance and repair of water and steam systems and related equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the use of diverse hand and power tools and machines pertaining to the trade.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and apply oral and written instructions, blueprints and schematic drawings; and to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair water and steam systems.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license may be required.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional vocational training in the plumbing trade or a related trades area.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in plumbing or steamfitting repair and maintenance.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
