CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first level class in the Plumber/Steamfitter series. Positions in this class assist skilled Plumbers/Steamfitters by performing a variety of routine, unskilled or semi-skilled tasks in the plumbing/steamfitting trade. This class is distinguished from the Plumber/Steamfitter Class which performs a variety of skilled tasks at the journey level.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks of routine difficulty to assist other Plumbers/Steamfitters. Typically, the duties are routine and repetitive in nature. Positions in this class may cut and drill holes in walls and floors and set sleeves or inserts to provide support and passage for pipes; measure, cut, end, thread and assemble pipe as specified and place the assembled pipe in hangers or other supports; service and unclog drains, grease traps, sinks and toilets; adjust repair and assist in replacing leaky faucets, toilets and other outlets; assist in the repair of valves, gaskets, expansion joints, pumps and gauges; clean and renew steam traps, packing material. This class also collects and transports materials and equipment to the work site and cleans and removes debris from the work site.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class work under the immediate supervision of a Plumber/Steamfitter Supervisor or other higher level Buildings and Grounds class.

Scope: Facilitates the work of others but has little impact beyond the immediate work area.

Impact of Actions: Positions in this class have minor impact on work progress or completion.

Personal Contacts: This class has infrequent external contact with suppliers to pick-up material and frequent internal and external contact with individuals working, visiting or living in assigned work areas.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of methods and general procedures of the plumber/steamfitter trade and of the installation, maintenance and repair of water and steam systems.

Skills: Some skill in the use of hand and power tools related to the plumber/ steamfitter trade.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, to perform manual labor, and work from ladders and scaffolds in confined areas, and to use and operate hand and power tools.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license may be required.

Education or Training: Completion of elementary school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience related to the plumber/steamfitter trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
