CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the fourth and supervisory level class in the Mason Plasterer series. Positions in this class have complete responsibility for planning and scheduling specific work assignments, and inspecting ongoing and completed work of Mason Plasterers/Seniors. This class is distinguished from the Mason Plasterer Lead class by its responsibility for performing the full range of supervisory duties as well as planning and scheduling work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty by supervising and coordinating activities of workers engaged in laying cement block, stone or brick; constructing retaining walls; caulking expansion joints, construction joints and storm drains; preparing and applying waterproofing materials to structural surfaces, such as masonry and concrete. Schedules, supervises and inspects work of Mason Plasterers, Mason Plasterer Seniors and Mason Plasterer Assistants. Analyzes blueprints to determine surface area to be covered and estimates worker hours and materials requirements. Determines and requisitions necessary material and supplies to assure completion of work assignments as scheduled, using knowledge of the plastering/mason trades. Observes work in progress to insure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications. Inspects material application for uniform thickness, surface flaw and consistency of mix. Inspects finished installations for conformity to standard and approves installation. Interprets specifications to insure compliance with regulation governing construction. Records quantities of materials used during specified periods. Maintains daily log of construction activities and compares progress reports. Computes estimates of work completed. Performs the more difficult plastering such as running decorative cornices, making molds for casting ornamental plaster work in order to ensure that the new matches the old. Conducts performance evaluations, disciplines or recommends disciplinary action of employees, and grants approval of leave.

Supervision Given: Supervises the work of Mason Plasterer Seniors, Mason Plasterers and Mason Plasterer Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a buildings and ground supervisor or director, with regard to overall program goals and objectives as they relate to assigned responsibilities.

Scope: Positions in this class contribute to a program that affects the appearance as well as the soundness and safe use of agency buildings and grounds.

Impact of Actions: Quality of workmanship affects overall appearance of completed assignments.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class have contact with employees to coordinate with other departments the completion of projects; supply stores to requisition materials and contractors for scheduling duties associated with specific projects.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the standard practices of the bricklaying and/or plastering trade. Considerable knowledge of planning and layout problems; ability to estimate cost of materials and labor; ability to direct and supervise the work of plasterers and assistants.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of equipment relating to the plastering/construction trade.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform assignments; to direct the work of others; to accurately calculate project requirements; and to train and provide technical guidance to lower level mason-plasterers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent, with vocational course work related to the bricklaying and/or plastering trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the occupations concerned with laying brick, stone and cement block, applying plaster, waterproofing and use of other materials related to the trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
