CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third level class in the Mason Plasterer series. Positions in this class perform highly skilled tasks and have the responsibility for preparing estimates, selecting and requisitioning materials, and providing direction and expertise to work crews of bricklayers or plasterers in the performance of independent projects. This class is distinguished from the Mason Plasterer by functioning in a lead capacity over Mason Plasterers and Mason Plasterer Assistants. It is distinguished from the Mason Plasterer Supervisor by the latter's responsibility for planning and scheduling work and by performance of the full range of supervisory duties.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Positions in this class perform work of moderate difficulty while providing leadership and technical guidance to a crew of Mason Plasterers and Plasterer Assistants. The work typically involves laying cement block and brick, constructing retaining walls, caulking expansion joints, construction joints and storm drains; applying coats of plaster, stucco, cement and/or fireproofing materials to interior walls, ceilings and partitions to produce protective or decorative finished surface. Applies weatherproof decorative covering of cement or plaster to outside building surfaces. Cuts doorways through masonry walls or removes masonry walls when required. Installs ceramic tile on floors and walls; plasters wall where damage has occurred. Spreads plaster over masonry base; applies finish coats of plaster; roughens undercoat with wire to provide bond for succeeding coats of plaster. May install insulation on pipes, boilers, valves and tanks using fiberglass, kaylo, foamglass, and poured insulation. May install guide wires on surface of buildings to indicate thickness of covering to be applied. Demonstrates mixing, plastering cementing and other techniques to workers. May maintain time and performance records; requisition and inventory materials and/or prepare cost estimates. May assume supervisor's duties in his or her absence.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, they may provide technical assistance to Mason Plasterers and Mason Plasterer Assistants and may inspect their work.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from Mason Plasterer Supervisor or Buildings and Grounds Supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the successful completion of mason plasterer projects and affects the professional development of lower level trades workers in this field by ensuring accurate completion of their work.

Impact of Actions: Inadequate directions to lower level employees in this trade could negatively affect public safety. Effective job performance results in highly skilled, quality work.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with suppliers concerning equipment and supplies and with agency staff concerning work orders.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the methods of the plastering/masonry trade; of basic math, fractions, decimals and shop principles.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of hand tools, and portable power tools relating to this trade.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprint sketches and specifications, to follow written and oral instructions and to maintain accurate records. Ability to carry and lift tools, ability to exert a great amount of physical effort in working from scaffolding and swing stages; ability to work in weather extremes; to perform heavy manual labor, and to work from heights.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in rough and finish masonry, indoor and outdoor plastering, and/or waterproofing.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
