CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second level class in the Mason Plasterer series. Positions in this class have responsibility for determining work methods to be used in accomplishing tasks and planning work details by performing all types of stone, cement block, brick laying and plastering jobs. This class is distinguished from the Mason Plasterer Assistant by having the responsibility for determining methods and carrying out all phases of work related to mason/plastering. It is distinguished from the Mason Plasterer Lead by the latter's responsibility for assigning and overseeing work of Mason Plasterers and Mason Plasterer Helpers.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty to include laying cement, block and brick; constructing stone retaining walls; caulking expansion joints, construction joints and storm drains; applying coats of plaster, stucco cement and/or fireproofing materials to interior walls, ceilings and partitions to produce protective or decorative finished surface, according to blueprints, architect's drawings or oral instructions; using hand tools and portable power tools. Applies weather proof, decorative covering of cement or plaster to outside building surfaces, using hand tools and high pressure washers. Cuts doorways through masonry walls or removes masonry walls when required. Installs ceramic tile on floors and walls; plasters walls where damage has occurred. Spreads plaster over masonry base, using trowel, and smooths to attain uniform thickness. Applies finish coats of plaster; roughens undercoat with wire or metal scraper to provide bond for succeeding coats of plaster, marking with brush and trowel. May install insulation on pipes, boilers, valves and tanks using fiberglass, kaylo, foam glass, and poured insulation. May install guide wires on surface of buildings to indicate thickness of covering to be applied.

Supervision Given: Positions normally do not supervise the work of others though they may provide assistance and guidance to Mason Plasterer Assistants.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the general supervision of a Mason Plasterer Supervisor.

Scope: Positions in this class contribute to a program that affects the appearance of the agency.

Impact of Actions: Quality of workmanship affects overall appearance of completed assignments.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with suppliers concerning equipment and supplies and with agency staff concerning work orders.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the standard practices, materials and process of the plastering and/or bricklaying trade; knowledge of elementary arithmetic and units of measure.

Skills: Working skill in the use of equipment relating to the plastering/construction trade, such as masonry saws, mortar mixers, and portable power tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to lay out work details; and ability to interpret and work from blueprints. Ability to exert a great amount of physical effort in erecting ladders, lifting and working in awkward positions. Ability to perform described duties at the journey level.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the occupations concerned with laying and repairing concrete and brick masonry, applying plaster, waterproofing and use of other materials related to the trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
