CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Mason Plasterer series. Positions in this class perform a wide range of semi-skilled mason plasterer tasks or related duties while working closely with a skilled mason plasterer. This class is distinguished from the Mason Plasterer by the Assistant's performance of tasks of a preparatory and simple nature, or performance of more complex tasks under close supervision.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty to assist skilled Mason Plasterers. Mixes mortar and concrete; erects scaffolding; points up joints with mortar; and finishes cement in order to complete necessary repairs using detailed instructions, a mortar machine, a concrete machine, hand tools and other masonry equipment. Provides assistance to mason plasterers in the installation and repair of concrete and brick masonry, and the application of plaster over lath, mesh or masonry base. Assists plasterers in sheetrock finishing and ceramic tile installation. Delivers materials and tools to job sites in order to complete project on schedule; keeps journeyman supplied with tools while job is in progress. Cleans debris from job sites in order to provide safe working conditions according to safety regulations; erects barricades at job sites in order to assure that work areas are clearly marked.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class receive general supervision from higher level mason plasterers, who give instructions and review work during progress.

Scope: Facilitate work of others but has little impact beyond immediate job site.

Impact of Actions: Work can either facilitate or inhibit the progress of projects of Mason Plasterers.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent external contacts with suppliers to obtain supplies and materials. Frequent contact with a variety of state employees during performance of duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the practices, procedures and techniques of basic masonry and plastering trade; knowledge of elementary arithmetic and units of measure.

Skills: Working skill in the use of all equipment relevant to the Mason Plasterer trade.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to meet physical demands of job duties, which include heavy lifting without assistance; working at heights, in inclement weather and in awkward (bending, kneeling) positions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Completion of elementary school.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the occupations concerned with laying and repairing concrete and brick masonry, applying plaster, waterproofing and use of other materials related to the trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
