TURBINE OPERATOR 61451

05/01/92 G

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single, journey level class in the Turbine Operations series. Positions in this class monitor steam-driven turbines in an electric generating station, make necessary operational adjustments, and take steps necessary to correct equipment malfunctions.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty by monitoring and making necessary load adjustments to a steam-driven turbine. Typical duties include maintaining a constant watch on steam-turbine control panel, which includes pressure gauges, reducing stations, oil systems and all vibration monitoring equipment to control operations and to detect equipment malfunctions. Positions in this class record instrument readings at specified intervals; clean the turbine room, switch gear, and all related areas and equipment; bring steam-turbine on and off line as conditions warrant; and maintain a daily activity log. This class may assist with maintenance duties throughout the power plant when the turbine is not in operation.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: General supervision is received from a Power Plant Shift Supervisor, Superintendent or higher level Buildings and Grounds Supervisor.

Scope: Performs duties which affect the production of electric power provided to a university and/or private community.

Impact of Actions: Work activities enable turbine operations to provide uninterrupted electrical peak shaving and heating requirements of a university or facility. Failure to adequately monitor equipment and detect malfunctions or requirements for adjustments could cause damage to the turbine resulting in expensive repairs and interrupted service.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class may have infrequent external contacts with contractors to discuss maintenance and operation of the steam turbine.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of steam turbine operations.

Skills: Skilled in the operation of steam turbines.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to control turbine operations and react to equipment malfunctions using detailed procedures and guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in a power plant, either in operations or maintenance.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
