CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first level class in the Boiler Operations series. Positions in this class typically assist Boiler Operators by performing a variety of routine boiler room operational duties in a power plant. This class is distinguished from the higher level Boiler Operator by the latter's responsibility for independently performing the full range of complex boiler operation duties.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty with responsibility for operating and maintaining all coal, wood and ash handling equipment including maintenance, minor repair and lubrication. This includes the operation of a dump truck and front end loader to haul, load and unload coal, as well as the operation of conveyers to fill coal bunkers. May also assist Boiler Operator with the operation of the boilers by monitoring gauges and performing routine maintenance or other tasks under close supervision.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Power Plant Operations Shift Supervisor, or Superintendent.

Scope: Facilitates the work of others but has little impact beyond the immediate unit.

Impact of Actions: Errors have minor impact on the agency, causing some inconvenience and confusion but little cost in time, money, services or public/employee goodwill. However, an error or violation of safety practices could endanger lives.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal and external contact which may include occasional contact with vendors.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some general knowledge of the principles of combustion and boiler firing practices.

Skills: Some skill in the operation of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to make minor repairs and maintain a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment; maintain and operate heavy equipment; and to read, write and perform simple arithmetic.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license may be required.

Education or Training: Graduation from elementary school or equivalent with some high school level course work.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience working with mechanical equipment.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
