CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class series for positions which maintain upholstered furniture by making repairs, and rebuilding and recovering furniture in the most cost effective manner. Positions in this class receive work orders, determine work methods and complete a wide range of upholstering and related work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Positions repair furni-ture frames, springs and webbing; recover furniture cushions, backs and arms by stripping furniture, cutting and sewing material, and install materials using a variety of hand tools; clean and paint furniture when required. Positions may perform related work such as installing wall to wall carpet, blinds and drapes. For each service call positions estimate labor and parts costs; and order necessary materials if not in stock. Maintains ongoing records of service, costs and inventory. Maintains industrial sewing machines by cleaning, oiling and replacing parts.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: General supervision is received from a Trades Supervisor. Higher level technical supervision is typically not available.

Scope: Positions repair and upholster furniture within an agency.

Impact of Actions: Work activities affect the appearance of reliability of agency furniture and the maintenance budget of the organizational unit to which assigned.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal contacts with agency personnel when responding to service calls. Infrequent external contacts with vendors when ordering supplies and with dry cleaners when having furniture professionally cleaned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the upholstery trade; of the qualities and uses of materials and coverings.

Skills: Skilled in the use of hand tools and industrial sewing machines.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to make cost estimates of labor and supplies; to maintain inventory records.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school with additional training in the upholstery trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Journey level experience in upholstering or general furniture repair.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was revised as part of the statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces Upholster and Upholsterer Leadman classes, effective May 1, 1992.
