CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Painter series. Positions in this class perform a variety of incidental or preparatory work to assist skilled painters, and perform semi-skilled routine painting and trade-related tasks. This class is distinguished from the Painter class by its performance of preparatory and routine painting and trades-related tasks under detailed instructions and close supervision.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty in support of skilled painters. Positions work under close supervision while painting, varnishing, staining, enameling or lacquering interior and exterior surfaces and fixtures using brushes, rollers, or spray guns. Positions in this class spread cloth or canvas over floors and furniture; assist in erecting scaffolding with the use of ladders and scaffolding forms; prepare surfaces using sandpaper, wire brushes, and steel wool; remove old paint; fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster or other fillers; transport tools and materials to the job site; keep the job site clean of debris; and assist in mixing paints in prescribed proportions and colors. May perform other trades-related miscellaneous tasks.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Painter Supervisor, Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, or this higher level supervisory class. May receive technical instruction from a Lead Painter.

Scope: Facilitates the work of others but has little impact beyond the immediate job site.

Impact of Actions: Work can either negatively or positively impact the work progress or completion of painting assignments.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with individuals working, residing, or visiting in assigned work area, generally for the purpose of coordinating the movement of equipment and furniture and painting activities. Infrequent external contact with vendors to pick up materials.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of painting methods and the use of painting equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the use of painting equipment and tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to perform painting tasks; to perform manual labor; and to work from heights.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Some positions may require a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Education or training sufficient to follow and complete basic oral and written instructions.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience related to general painting work.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
