CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the fourth and supervisory level class in the Sheet Metal series. Positions in this class supervise the sheet metal shop and all employees assigned to it. Duties include project planning, procurement of equipment and materials, interpretation and application of specifications and codes, and staff supervision. This class is distinguished from the Sheet Metal Lead Worker class by its responsibility to provide formal supervision.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty. Supervises and instructs staff and contract personnel in the performance of their duties. Establishes performance standards, evaluates performance and resolves disciplinary problems. Plans projects, determines broad work assignments and orders supplies. Observes work in progress and conducts final inspections and maintains complete records of materials used, staff assignments, and contract labor involvement. May be required to supervise other mechanical trades areas.

Supervision Given: Provides supervision to Sheet Metal Worker Assistants, Workers and Lead Workers, or other trades positions.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Buildings and Grounds Supervisor or Superintendent.

Scope: Work affects all sheet metal and related operations on an agency-wide basis and the professional development of staff.

Impact of Actions: Effective decisions and actions ensure the quality, timeliness and cost effectiveness of services provided and the safety of employees, guests, students and visitors.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with agency personnel to establish work schedules, and with vendors to purchase materials or coordinate contract repair work.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the sheet metal trade and roofing; of agency procurement policies; of departmental policies; of the principles of supervision; of project planning requirements; and of the agency's overall physical plant operation.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of electric hand and shop tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to interpret blueprints and plan work assignments; to calculate cost estimates; to train and supervise others; and to perform sheet metal and roofing duties.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in a related trades or mechanical field.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the fabrication and installation of a variety of sheet metal products.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
