CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Sheet Metal series. Positions in this class perform a variety of sheet metal and roof repair duties and have responsibility for functioning as a lead worker. Duties include scheduling jobs and service calls; maintaining records on material usage; inspecting the work completed by others; and performing the more difficult technical tasks. This class is distinguished from the Sheet Metal Worker class by its lead worker responsibilities. It is further distinguished from the Sheet Metal Supervisor class which provides formal supervision to all those engaged in sheet metal work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty. Provides leadership to work crews at one or more sites. Determines repair or installation needs, orders materials, plans the work schedules, makes assignments, and inspects the work. Maintains records on service calls and materials used. Performs the full range of sheet metal duties and performs the more complex aspects of the roofing, heating and air conditioning shop work or special fabrication. May be required to act as Sheet Metal Supervisor during supervisor's absence.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions in this class do provide leadership and technical direction to Sheet Metal Workers and Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Sheet Metal Supervisor or other trades supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the completion of a variety of sheet metal assignments on an agency-wide basis.

Impact of Actions: Effective decisions and actions facilitate the quality, timeliness and cost effectiveness of projects and the safety of staff, employees, students and visitors.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with agency personnel during service calls; with contractors and architects when planning work crew assignments; and with vendors when ordering supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the sheet metal trade and roof repair, of agency procurement procedures, and of the agency's physical plant.

Skills: Considerable skills in the use of electric hand or shop tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings; to lead others; to perform strenuous manual labor, and to fabricate and install a variety of sheet metal products.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in a related trades or mechanical field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience fabricating and installing a variety of sheet metal products.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
