CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Sheet Metal series. Positions in this class perform all aspects of sheet metal and roof repair work and have the responsibility for determining work methods and completing most assignments independently. This class is distinguished from the Sheet Metal Assistant class which performs preparatory work and assists with sheet metal and roofing projects. It is distinguished from the Sheet Metal Lead Worker class by the latter's responsibility to lead others in the scheduling and performance of duties.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Positions read and interpret blueprints and drawings to determine what supplies and methods are needed to complete an assignment. Independently fabricates sheet metal parts in order to repair a variety of roofing systems or to insulate and install all types of heating and air conditioning duct work. Inspects roofs, heating systems and other work areas in order to insure proper, continuous operation. Fabricates and installs exhaust hoods, fans, metal boxes and storage cabinets cab shields and traffic signal back plates. Positions in this class maintain records of service calls and parts and labor expended, and may be required to purchase parts and equipment from local suppliers.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions may provide technical guidance to Sheet Metal Assistants or Trades/Utilities Workers.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Sheet Metal Supervisor or other trades supervisor. Receives work direction from a Sheet Metal Lead Worker.

Scope: Work affects the full range of sheet metal duties for all areas within an agency.

Impact of Actions: Work impacts the quality and timeliness of services provided and the safety of staff, employees, students and visitors.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal and external contacts with agency personnel during service calls; with architects and contractors when determining working specifications; and with vendors when ordering supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the sheet metal trade and roof repair.

Skills: Working skill in the use of electric hand and shop tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings; to maintain written records of service calls; to fabricate and install a variety of sheet metal products; and to perform strenuous manual labor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in a related trades or mechanical field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in sheet metal work or a related mechanical trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
