CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Sheet Metal series. Positions in this class perform tasks which are incidental or preparatory to the work of skilled sheet metal positions; and assist with all aspects of sheet metal and roofing work. This class is distinguished from the Sheet Metal Worker class by the latter's responsibility to determine work methods and work independently while performing all aspects of sheet metal and roofing work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty. Assists in layout, fabrication, insulation and installation of all types of heating and air conditioning duct work which involves offsets, reducers, pans, ells, louvers and ducts. Assists in the fabrication and installation of exhaust hoods, fans and metal boxes. Assists in the repair of flashing, gutters and downspouts and in the repair of a variety of roofing systems. Additional duties include cleaning the shop and preparing and aligning materials and tools.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Sheet Metal Supervisor. Receives technical guidance and direction from a Sheet Metal Worker or Sheet Metal Lead Worker.

Scope: This class assists with sheet metal activities which affect the staff, students, and visitors in an assigned area.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance facilitates the completion of sheet metal projects and the quality of services provided to the agency. Incorrect fabrication or installation of projects can negatively affect safety.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal and external contact with agency staff during service calls or with vendors if picking up supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the sheet metal trade; of elementary arithmetic; and of units of measure.

Skills: Working skill in the use of electric hand and shop tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions; to read blueprints and drawings; and to perform heavy manual labor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in a mechanical or roofing trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
