CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Trades/Utilities series. Positions in this class perform a variety of routine, unskilled or semi-skilled tasks incidental to and/or preparatory to trades and maintenance tasks; or assist higher level trades/utilities workers or higher level craft personnel who are performing a combination of skilled trades assignments. This class is distinguished from the Trades/Utilities Worker Senior class which performs journey level work in at least one trades area and general maintenance work in related areas.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty, involving a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks to assist higher level Trades/Utilities workers or more specialized trades personnel. Work is performed within specific instructions and standards provided by a higher level trades or supervisory position. Work is repetitive in nature and may include a combination of duties in one or more trades areas. Undertakes or assists in routine preparatory and clean up tasks required at work sites which include collecting and delivering tools and equipment, picking up requisitioned supplies, cleaning area, and disposing of trash. Assists with or carries out a variety of standardized preventive maintenance tasks such as adjusting fan belts, tightening connections, cleaning and lubricating equipment, replacing and cleaning filters, adjusting valves, repairing faucets and light fixtures, replacing light bulbs, and unstopping plumbing. Assists in the preparation of surfaces for painting by mixing and applying plaster, primer, sealer and paint as directed where skilled work is not required. Erects ladders and scaffolding. Assists in demolishing or removing old structures, broken glass and tiles. Assists with the cutting, sanding and erecting/installing of structures made of wood, plywood, wall board, sheet metal and other building materials. Mixes and pours concrete. Assists in cutting, threading and joining pipe; pulling electrical cable; and installing heating, ventilation and air conditioning ducts and related equipment and controls. Undertakes or assists in setting up/tearing down facilities for athletic or other special events. Moves office, classroom, dormitory furniture and other equipment or related items as directed or assists with these activities. Mows lawns; rakes leaves; trims trees; removes snow; and grooms and maintains gardens and grounds as directed. Operates motor vehicles, forklifts, rider mowers, and light or hand power tools and equipment to accomplish the above duties. May create signs, plaques, badges and other items using a variety of non-computerized engraving and sign-making equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class receive immediate supervision from a higher level trades and utility position or agency administrator.

Scope: Facilitates the work of others but has little or no impact beyond the immediate job site. Some positions may provide engraving and sign-making services for the agency.

Impact of Actions: Work can either positively or negatively affect the completion of assigned jobs and the operation of equipment.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent outside contact with vendors or suppliers to pick up materials. Frequent contacts with individuals working, residing or visiting in assigned work areas generally for the purpose of coordinating the movement of equipment and furniture and creating signs and nameplates.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of methods and general procedures of an applicable trade.

Skills: Working skill in the use of equipment and tools related to assigned trades areas.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and to perform heavy manual labor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license may be required.

Education or Training: Grammar school or training sufficient to read basic instructions.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience related to assisting in a trades area.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class, developed as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program, replaces the Trades Helper and Utility Serviceman classes, effective April 1993.
