CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Electrician series. Positions in this class perform advanced, complex electrical work in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment and may serve as a lead worker over electrical work crews. This class is distinguished from the Electrician class by its lead worker responsibilities, or by the responsibility to locate, diagnose and repair the most complex electrical system problems which may include high voltage systems. It is distin-guished from the Electrician Supervisor class which provides formal supervision to Electrician Helpers, Electricians and Electrician Seniors.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which involves installing conduits to connect outlets, panels and boxes; pulling wire through conduits and splicing wire; installing, connecting and maintaining electrical fixtures such as light sockets, switches and outlet boxes; testing circuits for continuity and proper connections using various testing devices; and connecting circuits to power sources and testing operation of all switches and equipment. Runs intercom, telephone, and computer cable. In addition to maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment in buildings and grounds such as fans, heaters, lamps, heat pumps, air conditioners, water heaters, well pumps, ice makers, etc., some positions also install, remove, service, and repair electrical equipment for automotive systems, highway maintenance equipment, and other highway electrical equipment, such as roadway lighting, highway sign lighting, tunnel lighting, bridge lift equipment, generators, tunnel pumps and motors, fuel pumps, mobile two-way radios, electrical and heating equipment on paint markers and asphalt tanks, etc. Positions in this class may inspect the work of contract employees maintain service/work records and provide input into the performance evaluations of Electricians and Electrician Assistants. In lieu of lead responsibilities, positions may predominately perform work on the most complex electrical systems which may include primary and secondary high voltage distribution systems which includes installation and maintenance of power lines, transformers, cutouts, arrestors and oil switches, traffic management equipment, and other complex electrical systems.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions may provide technical assistance and guidance to Electricians and Electrician Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from an Electrician Supervisor or Electrician Supervisor Senior position.

Scope: Activities affect the operation of electrical equipment which affects the safety of the work environment and affects agency processes, services, personnel, and clients.

Impact of Actions: Errors can be costly in terms of money, time, and personnel resources, and can prohibit the provision of services. Accurate installation and maintenance of electrical equipment positively impacts the safety of agency personnel and enables the continued provision of agency services.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent external contacts with electrical and building suppliers to secure materials needed for assignments; and with visitors passing through work areas. Frequent internal contact with agency personnel regarding electrical service.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the standard practices of the electrical trade; of the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment; and of the national electric code.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of tools and instruments used to install and maintain electrical equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations; to provide work direction to others; and to repair and install electrical equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent, with additional course work related to the electrical trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
