CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Electrician series. Positions in this class focus on performing tasks in support of or preparatory to the work of Electricians in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. This class is distinguished from the Electrician class by the latter's responsibility for independently installing, connecting and maintaining a variety of electrical fixtures.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which typically includes cutting, bending and threading conduits; pulling wire through conduits; splicing wiring which involves soldering connections or fastening with clamps or couplings; installing fixtures, outlets and switches and making wire connections; installing flush places over switches and outlets; connecting completed electrical circuits to power sources; replacing defective wiring and making connections to new electrical installations; and replacing burned out light bulbs, fuses and plugs. Some positions build frames and pour cement for traffic signa control cabinet base and signal pole foundations; set traffic signal poles; run span and tether wire; hand and wire new or replace old signal heads; install junction boxes; install traffic signal loops; paint control cabinets and signal poles; operate bucket truck with trailer and other related equipment. Duties may also include performing routine maintenance on electric motors and making minor repairs to electrical equipment such as fans, heaters, and lamps, heat pumps, air conditioners, roadway lighting, sign lighting, tunnel lighting, bridge lift equipment, generators, tunnel pumps, motors, and traffic signal equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from an Electrician Supervisor, Electrician Supervisor Senior, or Traffic Signal Technician Supervisor. Work direction is provided by an Electrician, Electrician Senior, or positions in the Traffic Signal Technician series.

Scope: Positions in this class perform work which affects the lighting and electrical equipment of assigned areas which in turn affects the employees, students, and visitors of those areas.

Impact of Actions: Actions could negatively impact the agency in terms of services, convenience, and safety if assigned areas are not adequately lighted, or if electrical equipment is not properly installed or maintained.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal contacts with the agency personnel related to electric service matters. Occasional external contact with visitors passing through work areas.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the practices, procedures and techniques of electrical maintenance and installation.

Skills: Working skill in the use of assorted hand tools and electrical equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform basic preparatory installation and maintenance work of electrical equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: None required for entrance into this class.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was revised as part of the statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class replaces the Electrician Assistant and Highway Equipment Helper classes, effective May 1, 1992.
