CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Electric Service series. Positions in this class perform a variety of routine duties relating to the installation and maintenance of high voltage electric power lines. This class is distinguished from the Powerline Worker class by the latter's requirement to work more independently, troubleshoot mechanical/electrical problems and make necessary repairs.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which involves digging holes for powerline poles by using a line truck auger; erecting powerline poles; attaching crossarms to poles; pulling wire onto poles; and hoisting transformers, voltage regulators, and other parts of a complete electrical system such as insulators, and capacitors. Digs trenches by using a trencher; installs conduits and pull boxes in trenches; pours concrete to encase conduits; pulls wire by using an air gun and mechanical device on line truck; and installs transformers. Other duties may include trimming trees; loading and unloading materials; driving line trucks; and operating bucket trucks.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from an Electric Service Supervisor. May receive work direction from a Powerline Worker or Powerline Lead Worker.

Scope: Facilitates the work of others but has little impact beyond the immediate unit.

Impact of Actions: Errors generally have a minor affect on the project with some inconvenience and confusion, and some cost in time, money, services or public/ employee goodwill. A violation of safety practices could endanger lives. Effective job performance facilitates the timely completion of electric service projects.

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the design, installation and maintenance of electric power lines.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform basic electrical powerline procedures; and to climb poles and work while aloft.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.
