CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the fourth and supervisory level class in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Installation and Repair series. Positions in this class are responsible for planning, scheduling, prioritizing and supervising the activities of a work group of HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians, Senior Technicians, Assistants and other skilled and semi-skilled workers. This class is distinguished from the HVAC Installation and Repair Lead Technician class by its responsibility for the full range of supervisory duties as well as for the planning and scheduling of work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty requiring independent action in planning, prioritizing, scheduling, inspecting and supervising heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration projects and personnel. This work typically includes planning, supervising, and inspecting the installation, operation, trouble shooting, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of HVAC and auxiliary equipment, including control devices and complete systems in order to provide a comfortable, safe and healthy environment. Provides technical and diagnostic guidance to a work group in order to resolve problems concerning the operation, maintenance, repair or installation of HVAC and auxiliary equipment and related controls. Conducts in-house training for technicians and demonstrates proper operating and maintenance methods and techniques. Makes recommendations to management concerning renovation or replacement of HVAC equipment/systems. Maintains operating and costs records. Prepares cost estimates. Selects, orders or initiates purchase orders for parts, supplies and equipment required to maintain adequate inventory for HVAC operational needs. Observes installation of HVAC equipment by contractors to become familiar with any special operating or maintenance requirements. Positions in this class conduct performance evaluations, recommend hiring, grant leave approval and resolve routine disciplinary problems.

Supervision Given: Plans, schedules, assigns, inspects and evaluates the work of HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians, Senior Technicians, and Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a higher level buildings and grounds position in the form of outlines of the results expected and review of work upon completion. Consults with supervisor in unusual or complex situations.

Scope: Activities affect the dependable operation and maintenance of HVAC units, and complete systems as well as auxiliary/support equipment to provide a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment.

Impact of Actions: Errors inhibit the provision of quality HVAC services. Effective supervision will facilitate the efficient use of employees and material and ensure dependable operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with staff to plan and coordinate projects; with employees, faculty, residents, and clients to explain status of equipment affecting their area; and with contractors and vendors regarding supplies, material and work orders.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods associated with HVAC installation, repair, maintenance, installation and the operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment, controls, auxiliary equipment and systems.

Skills: Considerable skill in the operation and use of test and diagnostic equipment as well as hand and power tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise, plan and schedule the work of others; to interpret drawings, blueprints, specifications and work orders; to maintain records; and to make estimates of labor and materials.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent and vocational training or course work in HVAC repair.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in HVAC equipment, materials, repair, and systems.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
