CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Installation and Repair series. Positions in this class perform skilled repair, maintenance, and installation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems while leading a group of HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians, Assistants, and other skilled and semi-skilled trades workers; or performs specialized, highly skilled tasks for preventive maintenance and/or repair work which requires the use of specialized equipment, tools, and/or technologies. This class is distinguished from the HVAC Installation and Repair Technician class by its responsibility for leading, assigning, and inspecting the work of other technicians and trades workers, or by the knowledge and training required to perform highly skilled, specialized maintenance functions. It is distinguished from the HVAC Installation and Repair Supervisor class by the latter's responsibility for planning work and performing the full range of supervisory duties.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty with responsibility for independently installing, maintaining and repairing HVAC systems, while providing technical guidance to other workers and acting in a lead capacity. Typical duties include leading, assigning and inspecting the work of HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians and Assistants; installing and modifying HVAC and refrigerator equipment and systems; analyzing faults and determining repairs; replacing worn or damaged parts; performing routine preventative maintenance; adjusting and calibrating pneumatic controls; and verifying the operation of safety and control devices. Orders parts and materials and maintains inventory of parts and records of completed repairs. May assume supervisor's duties in his or her absence. May schedule or assign work to crews, and maintain maintenance and personnel records. This class may function in a non-leadership role when the full-time duties involve the application of highly specialized maintenance and/or repair equipment that require a higher level of training and expertise in the HVAC field.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions do function in a lead capacity for a small to moderate size group of HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians and Assistants by making assignments, providing technical guidance, instruction and inspecting completed work.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from an HVAC Installation and Repair Supervisor or other higher level supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the working condition of HVAC equipment and systems and affects the efficient use of resources.

Impact of Actions: Work performed by positions in this class impacts the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Failure to correctly perform required duties will create undesirable environmental conditions or system failure. Failure to properly lead work crew in assigned work may result in considerable re-work and expense. Effective job performance ensures the efficient working conditions of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class may have frequent internal and external contacts with vendors, contractors, the public and other agency personnel to obtain supplies, materials, and explain work activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of all aspects of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems' operation, repair, maintenance and installation.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of HVAC diagnostic equipment and hand tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to install, repair and maintain HVAC systems; to troubleshoot and diagnose repair problems; and to assign, inspect and lead the work of others.
