CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Installation and Repair series. Positions in this class repair, install, and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The class is distinguished from the HVAC Installation and Repair Assistant class by its responsibility for performing skilled maintenance, installation and repair and by its responsibility for providing technical guidance to HVAC assistants. This class is distinguished from the HVAC Installation and Repair Senior Technician class by the latter's responsibility for leading the work of and providing technical guidance to a crew of HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians or other skilled and semi-skilled trades workers, and/or performing specialized, highly skilled tasks requiring the use of specialized equipment, tools, and technologies.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibility for independently installing, maintaining and repairing HVAC systems. Typical duties include analyzing faults of equipment malfunctions and determining repairs; making adjustments to or replacing worn or damaged parts; adjusting alignment and tension on belts, pulleys, dampers, pumps, and motors; changing filters, lubricating and cleaning motors; adjusting and calibrating controls; inspecting, testing, and verifying operation of controls and safety devices; installing new or replacement HVAC units and components; writing work orders and requisitions; and maintaining service and preventative maintenance records. May perform other miscellaneous duties in other related trades areas.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions may provide technical guidance to HVAC Installation and Repair Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a HVAC Installation and Repair Supervisor or other higher level supervisor. Receives some instruction but is free to develop own work sequences within established procedures and policies.

Scope: Work affects the successful completion of a wide variety of repair, mainte-nance, and installation projects from inception to completion.

Impact of Actions: Failure to correctly perform required repair and maintenance duties may impact agencies by creating undesirable environmental conditions or system failure. Effective job performance ensures efficient working conditions of HVAC refrigeration equipment.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with all levels of agency personnel on repair matters. Frequent external contacts with contractors and suppliers regarding equipment, parts and materials.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC equipment; and of employed hand tools and diagnostic equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the use of HVAC diagnostic equipment and hand tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and schematics; and to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC refrigeration equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent and vocational training or course work in HVAC repair.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in HVAC installation, repair and maintenance.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
