CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Installation and Repair series. Positions in this class perform a range of semi-skilled routine repair and maintenance tasks in order to assist higher level HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. This class is distinguished from the HVAC Installation and Repair Technician class by its responsibility for performing semi-skilled repair and maintenance tasks under close supervision.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs semi-skilled work of routine difficulty to assist higher level HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians. Typical duties include assisting skilled HVAC Installation and Repair Technicians in performing maintenance and repair on various HVAC systems by disassembling, repairing and replacing compressors, valves, gaskets and bearings, condensers, belts, motors, evaporators, seals, air filters, and electronic controls. Checks for gas leaks and recharges systems with gases. Performs basic chemical analysis tests and adds chemicals as required. Makes minor adjustments to controls and equipment in order to maintain environmental conditions within predetermined tolerances. Assists in the installation of various HVAC units. May perform other miscellaneous duties such as cleaning, washing and painting equipment and equipment areas; obtaining necessary parts from suppliers; and writing work orders.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class receive immediate supervision from a higher level HVAC Installation and Repair position.

Scope: Work affects the working condition of agency heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

Impact of Actions: Failure to correctly perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs may result in undesirable environmental conditions. Effective job performance facilitates the proper working operation of equipment.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with various levels of agency personnel to discuss routine matters related to HVAC work. Infrequent contact with external sources in obtaining parts and materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of HVAC equipment operation and maintenance, and basic hand and diagnostic tools used in the field.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent with some course work in mechanical repair.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience related to HVAC equipment repair and maintenance.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
