Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs journeyman-level work in the quarrying and cutting of building stone.

Supervision is received from a Building Stone Quarry Lead Man.

Locates and identifies seamless stone suitable for use in the facing of buildings. Performs initial drilling to remove stone from quarry ledges, and the subsequent drilling and wedging required to block out stone into proper sizes.

Removes overburden and performs other tasks to keep work area clean and safe. Loads stone on trucks to move from quarry ledges to the cutting area. Performs stone cutting and shaping on days when weather prevents quarry operations. Performs related duties as assigned.

Incumbents are independently responsible for utilizing appropriate work methods for accomplishing specified tasks. Equipment utilized includes air compressors, air-operated rock splitters, hammers, wedges, loaders and heavy trucks.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of stone quarrying and stone masonry methods, procedures and tools. Ability to safely operate a variety of power and hand equipment. Ability to operate heavy trucks and perform heavy manual labor. Ability to work independently in supervisor’s absence.

Completion of elementary school, and experience related to the position’s duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
