CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the fourth and supervisory level class in the Carpentry series. Positions in this class have complete responsibility for planning, scheduling, and prioritizing specific work assignments; interpreting work orders, blueprints, or specifications; inspecting ongoing and completed work; and supervising carpentry personnel. This class is distinguished from the Carpenter Senior class by its responsibility for performing the full range of supervisory duties as well as planning and scheduling work.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty requiring independent action in planning, scheduling, prioritizing, inspecting, and supervising carpentry projects and personnel. The work typically includes supervising the construction, repair, and installation of building structures and components such as walls, ceilings, floors, doors and door frames, windows and window openings, paneling, insulation, trim work, decks, roofs, forms, and stairways. Supervises the maintenance and repair of roofs, wooden articles of furniture, office equipment, and shop equipment. Interprets the working details of work orders, blueprints, technical orders, or other specifications and instructs subordinate employees accordingly. Determines materials and supplies needed; prepares cost estimates and purchase orders; and maintains cost records of labor and materials. Positions also plan and schedule work assignments for carpentry personnel; assure that all supplies, materials, tools, and equipment are on hand; and perform regular inspections while work is in progress and following completion to assure compliance with all codes. Performs and gives detailed instructions on the more difficult interior and exterior finish work. Positions in this class conduct performance evaluations; recommend hiring; grant approval of leave; and resolve routine disciplinary problems.

Supervision Given: Positions supervise Carpenter Assistants, Carpenters, and Carpenter Seniors by assigning, inspecting, planning, scheduling, and evaluating work.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a higher level buildings and grounds supervisor which outlines the results expected and reviews work upon completion. Consultation with the supervisor is expected in unusual or complex situations.

Scope: Activities affect the construction, repair, renovation, and maintenance of buildings, furniture, fixtures, and other structures.

Impact of Actions: Performs work which impact the ability of the agency or institution to carry out its carpentry functions. Effective supervision will facilitate the efficient use of personnel, materials, and tools in the construction, repair, renovation and maintenance of buildings, furniture, fixtures and other structures. Errors can result in the untimely completion of projects, or the inefficient use of resources.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with staff to plan and coordinate projects, and frequent external contacts with vendors to evaluate and order materials and supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of all phases of carpentry, masonry, plastering, cabinetmaking, building construction, and maintenance. Working knowledge of math including fractions and decimals; and of principles of supervision.

Skills: Working skill in the operation and use of power and hand tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise, plan, and schedule the work of others; to lay out new construction; to maintain records; to interpret drawings, blueprints, work orders and specifications; and to make cost estimates of labor and materials.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent and vocational or trade school training in carpentry.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the carpentry field.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
