CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Carpentry series. Positions in this class function as lead workers, performing highly skilled carpentry tasks with additional responsibility for preparing estimates, selecting materials, maintaining work records, and providing direction and expertise to a work crew; or serve as a trades specialist performing highly skilled carpentry work such as cabinet making. This class is distinguished from the Carpenter class by its responsibility for leading work crews, complex finish work, preparation of estimates and selection of materials. It is distinguished from the Carpenter Supervisor by that class's responsibility for planning and scheduling work and by performance of the full range of supervisory duties.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

The work typically involves estimating, requisitioning, and preparing materials for job assignments; interpreting working details on work orders, blueprints and specifications; maintaining records of materials and equipment used and hours worked; providing instruction and guidance to Carpenters, Carpenter Assistants or inmates; inspecting work assignments; repairing, erecting, modifying and installing simple and complex interior and exterior trim work such as molding, baseboards, ceilings, and stairways; general roof repair; erecting and remodeling buildings to include erecting of additional walls, ceilings, doors and enclosures; cutting and framing door and window openings; making and refinishing cabinets and shelves; constructing wooden forms and scaffolds; and altering, repairing, or constructing custom and specialized furniture. May perform miscellaneous maintenance tasks such as repairing and installing locks, floors and tiles; bricklaying; concrete finishing; and other building trade related duties. May assume supervisor's duties in his or her absence. May be required to transport personnel/inmates to the work site and maintain time and performance records.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions provide technical assistance to Carpenters, Carpenter Assistants, and Bridge Construction Repair Workers and inspect their work.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from Carpenter Supervisor or higher level buildings and grounds supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the successful completion of carpentry projects from initial layout to final assembly; and affects the overall development of lower level carpenters by ensuring accurate completion of their work.
