CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Carpentry series. Positions in this class perform a wide range of semi-skilled carpentry tasks and related duties while working closely with a skilled carpenter. This class is distinguished from the Carpenter class by its performance of preparatory and simple rough carpentry or related tasks under detailed instructions and close supervision.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty in support of skilled carpenters. Cuts lumber and other materials as instructed using hand and power tools; nails, secures, and joins materials; and constructs wooden forms for various uses to include concrete pours, scaffolding, door stoops, and window and door frames. Makes simple repairs to and/or installs doors, windows, floors, cabinets, shelves, and furniture. Assists with concrete pouring and finishing with demolition. May perform miscellaneous tasks such as applying shingles, roofing felt, and building paper; and other semi-skilled maintenance and repair work. Delivers required materials to and from work site. Cleans and clears work site.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class receive immediate supervision from a Carpenter Supervisor or Transportation Maintenance Superintendent.

Scope: Facilitates work of others but has little impact beyond immediate job site.

Impact of Actions: Work can either facilitate or inhibit the progress of carpentry projects.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with State employees and students during the performance of duties. Infrequent external contacts with suppliers to obtain supplies and materials.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of basic carpentry, basic math, and units of measure.

Skills: Working skill in the use of hand and power tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; to perform heavy manual labor; to work from heights; and to work in inclement weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Grammar school or education sufficient to perform basic reading and writing.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience related to general carpentry work.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
